Obligatory Post-Dated Disclaimer Entry-Thingy
Hi *waves* this be my journal. I'm not popular as far as LJ standards go, but I have one of those simple usernames, so my journal does get some traffic. Here we go... · My name is Alyssa. My name is not Star. I am not your friend named Star who you think may have a LJ. · Only about 10% of my entries are friends only. · Feel free to add me. I may or may not add you back. · I frequently add people just because I find them interesting and I want to add their posts to my daily reading. There is no obligation to add me back.
Well, that's about it. That, and I wanted to make pretty tables. See? *gestures* Pretty tables. |

I received my last law school grade today. It's official--I now have a J.D.!
I graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors), which is pretty darn cool. I won't know my class rank for a few months, but summa almost guarantees me a spot in the top 10%.
Now I just have to study and pass this "bar exam" thing I keep hearing about. (And, on a happier note, finish Law Review stuff. I finished issue 3 today. Only one more issue to go!!)

69 days until I graduate from law school.
151 days until I will be finished with the Florida Bar Exam.
162 days until I start clerking at the court.
Hopefully many, many fewer than 162 days until Issue 4 of the Florida State University Law Review is sent to the printer.
But who's counting?

Professor Steve Gey was diagnosed with ALS ("Lou Gehrig's disease") about two years ago. I took his Constitutional Law I & II and First Amendment classes. Here, he is delivering remarks at the FSU law school graduation in 1990 based on the Shakespeare quote, "First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

I used to be able to write and write well. Really, I did. I have proof.
Alas, I no longer seem to possess this ability. I have a 25 page law review article-type paper due on Monday.
The cursor blinks, I blink back.
I stare into the white abyss of the word processor, and the abyss stares back.

Honorable Alex Kozinski, U.S. Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, on the subject of judicial independence: "In the Williams case in 1955, the Georgia Supreme Court told the United States Supreme Court, in so many words, 'We are not bound by your judgments.' Well, that too is independence, correct? What could be more independent than telling the United States Supreme Court Justices to go jump in a lake?"
"Or let's say I took it on myself to write all my opinions in law French. That would be independent, right? They probably couldn't impeach me for writing my opinions in law French. It would limit my choice of law clerks, but I'm sure I could manage to find some out-of-work medieval history Ph.Ds to help out." Source: 14 Ga. St. U. L. Rev. 861 (1998)

Every other person I've seen who has posted this has had a clear red / blue split. The entire top half is solidly blue or red, and the entire bottom half is solidly the other color.
My results, however, are kind of bizarre: 67% John McCain 61% Hillary Clinton 60% Mike Huckabee 60% Tom Tancredo 57% Barack Obama 57% John Edwards 56% Mitt Romney 56% Rudy Giuliani 54% Bill Richardson 52% Joe Biden 52% Fred Thompson 51% Chris Dodd 47% Ron Paul 46% Mike Gravel 40% Dennis Kucinich

At 3:30 this morning, I am awakened by my husband yelling, "He is creating a first-come, first-serve army!"
I sleepily blink and ask in the darkness, "Who?"
He responds, "The cats." He then rolls over, and lapses back into deep slumber.
I spend the next hour wondering what a first-come, first-serve army would be. Finally, I'm able to fall back to sleep.

This is not your typical Yosemite waterfall; most of them fall hundreds of glorious feet, straight down the side of a cliff, the satisfying view at the end of a 3 mile hike. But, yet, this was one of my favorites, perched right beside the road as just another roadside attraction, a culvert at the bottom collected the water and safely ran it under the road and out to the cliff on the other side.

I am getting married on Saturday.
Tonight was my bachelorette party. It was kicked off with a scavenger hunt with clues, starting with the first clue pointing to the old high school carpooling route and ending with the last clue at the law school. We went through about 12 clues, and I picked up "props" I had to wear along the way. I can't convey how cool it was. A few of the clues had friends I knew holding them (in the places that I met the people). It was like the Alyssa Krause Historical Tour.
The last clue (that Ramona--a law school friend--was holding at the law school) pointed us to San Miguels, where we met up with peoples and had queso. Then, back to Michelle's for smores.
So, two days. Wow. It all seems so surreal. And I can hardly type a coherent sentence. *wide eyed*

I'm still up because my brain believes I should be studying for the next exam. I haven't been able to convince it otherwise.I feel the need to correct mistaken information that has been widely spread about the "let's kill all the lawyers" quote in Shakespeare. This quote is popularly known from "Get Over It" by the Eagles: "The more I think about it ol' Billy was right, lets kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight."
The original Shakespeare quote is from Henry VI, part 2, Act IV: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
However, this quote has been taken out of context. The quote is from a conversation between co-conspirators plotting to overthrow the King. A better interpretation would be "[How do we bring about Tyranny?]...The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers." Which changes its meaning entirely: Where Law Ends, Tyranny Begins.
Just wanted to clear that up. ~ Alyssa (future Esq.) PS -- I took the wording of the correct interpretation from somewhere on teh internets. You didn't really think I was capable of the requisite higher-level thought processes after two weeks of law school finals, did you?

I'm having a frazzled day. Law school exams are next week. I am so behind. My mom is driving me crazy with wedding details.
The girl behind the counter at Starbucks is also having a frazzled day. It takes the two of us 5 minutes to suss out my drink and two gift cards -- both of us making a mess of it -- but we're both laughing at ourselves good naturedly.HER: Sorry, I'm just having a *makes gesture* day . . . *laughs*
ME: Don't worry, I'm in the same state of mind. *chuckles*
HER: *suddenly sobers, a sad look flits across her face* If that's true, I'm sorry to hear that.
ME: *quizzical look*
HER: My cousin's best friend was killed at Virginia Tech yesterday. I just found out this morning.
ME: I'm sorry to hear that.
ME: (*walking away* Well, that puts MY day in perspective)

So, I was trying to finish a (good) draft of the Open Memo, but my brain had other plans.
What was my brain doing, you may ask?
It was singing:We are Siamz if you plz We are siamz if you don't plz Yes, just like that, including egregious internet slang and all. In consolation, at least it had the sense to spell out "you."
Obviously, my brain and I don't have the same goals regarding law school.

Law school is so much fun. And very busy. But fun. And busy. But fun. Also, I feel like I'm actually working toward the rest of my life, rather than just toward the next day, the next case or the next paycheck.
My wedding dress came in today!!! *bounce* I think Patti, I and maybe a couple of my bridesmaids may drive up to Thomasville tomorrow to get it... *almost breathless* I can't wait...

I never thought it was possible to be this busy! Even when I was working at John's office full time (40 - 55 hours per week) and going to school full time (12 - 15 credit hours), I was not this busy.
I thought I was busy before, but then this whole "Oh my goodness, getting married in a year!" thing came up as well and now I'm even busier.
Plus my first year of law school starts in the Fall. *wide eyed*
Just letting you know that my life is hectic. Sorry to all the people I haven't talked to as much as I've wanted to! (Chances are this includes you!)

PSA:
Shackled.org is dead. (Read: Bought by a linking-portal-farm company when I wasn't looking and Register.com didn't notify me that my registration was expiring as they usually do. Either that, or they sent me a notification that looked exactly like a credit card offer. *dryly* I was a day late, but not a buck short. Ah, well.)
Long live Peraspera.org (per aspera).

EDIT: I would also like to add that below10host (my hosting company) came through once again. They made the transition a complete breeze, effortless on my part, really. I went ahead and just registered my new domain through them instead of Register.com. *loves her hosting company* They haven't failed me yet, in over three years.
